War in the morning, peace tower at night

We spent much of the day in the 10-year-old Canadian War Museum. Neither one of us expected to particularly enjoy it. It turned out to be one of the best museum experiences we've had. The history of war as it has affected Canadians beginning with First Nations and ending at present. Educational and emotional, we learned so much and were engrossed by it all. Static and interactive displays with brief yet thorough explanations - we have a better idea of our own history. We moved through trenches, watched videos, listened to survivors and were aghast at the destruction. War is never glorified - the awful reality is reinforced. Worth the visit.
After dinner we drove to Rideau Hall where we parked and wandered the neighbourhood - admiring the huge homes of Foreign Embassies and peaking through the fence at 24 Sussex Drive.
At the end of the day, we returned to Byward Market. This place teems with people from late morning to late evening. After wandering around enjoying the crowds, we bought some pastry and a chocolate-maple beaver tail, then walked to Parliament Hill for a sound and light show. Ending our time in Ottawa with a standing rendition of Oh Canada. We've had a super 2 and 1/2 days!
