I loved and was emotional about visiting parliament. I am proud of our Canadian democracy although I think it suffers from a bit of a cold right now and can stand some tender-loving care. I heard no politics while on the tours - the guides were scrupulous about avoiding any hint of controversy (doing a fine dance while answering troubling questions in the Senate chamber!)
But I found the walk along the fence of 24 Sussex sad. No feeling of pride here. Difference of opinion is one thing but I strongly regret the difference in basic values. Ironic that Canada's leadership in peace-keeping and ethnic diversity is repeatedly celebrated here - I look forward to its return.
